Bedford Ambulance 1974
Dormobile Ltd, England
Based on the Bedford CF truck, this ambulance is identical to those that were the backbone of the London Ambulance Service for many years. This particular exhibit was imported to New Zealand and was the forerunner of over 150 similar vehicles built in this country.
 
Begg Racing Car 1973
This New Zealand racing car, built by George Begg of Southland and driven by David Oxton, won the 1973 and 1974 Gold Star Championship. It came third in the 1974 NZ Grand Prix and was also raced successfully in England and Europe.
302 cu in Chevrolet, 480 hp.
 
Bentley 3 Ltr Tourer 1923

This exhibit, donated by Lady Southward, was used as a demonstrator by A F Halstead, sales manager for Bentley Motors and author of "Those Bentley Days". It was the first of the Bentleys to attract Royal patronage, being driven by Prince George. ?
 
Bentley 4 Ltr 1930

This 4 ltr model, which first appeared in 1927, was developed from the 3ltr which also had 4 valves per cylinder. Developing 130 bhp, it was one of the legendary big sports cars. From 1927 to 1931 only 713 4?ltr chassis were built. A 4 ltr won the Brooklands 500, clocking an average speed of 171.7 km/h (107.32 mph).
4 cyl.,100 mm bore, 140mm stroke, 4398 cc, dual HT magneto, 4-speed gearbox. Price ?1303.
 
Bentley 8 Ltr 1931
Bentley Motors Ltd, England
The biggest British car at the 1930 Olympia Motor Show, this impressive saloon could cruise at 160 km/h (100 mph) and was very easy to handle. In 1956 a lightened and tuned 8 ltr was timed at 226.7 km/h (141.7 mph) for the flying kilometre. This exhibit was rebodied by Van den Plas in 1938. Only 100 of these exclusive cars were made.
6 cylinders, 44.9 hp, 1100 mm bore, 140 mm stroke, 7983 cc (220 bhp at 3500 rpm). Dual ignition.
 
Benz Velo 1895
Benz & Co, Germany
Imported by Mr Nicholas Oates of Christchurch in 1900, it is believed the Benz was assembled by the Raglan Cycle Company in England. This remarkable car, which is considered to be the oldest car in New Zealand, still starts on the first pull over of the flywheel and was considered years ahead of its competitors with a mechanically operated inlet valve.
Single cylinder, 110 mm bore, 110 mm stroke, 1045 cc (2.75 hp at 760 rpm). Top speed 30 km/h (18.75 mph).
 
Bond Bug 1973
Reliant Motor Co Ltd, England
The first of the Bond three-wheelers appeared in 1949 powered by a single-cylinder two-stroke engine. Later Bond expanded into the full size car market and even made a 6 cylinder GT Coupe. When the firm was bought by Reliant in 1971 only the three wheeled "Bug", with its swing up cockpit canopy, was made until its demise in 1974.
4 cylinders, ohv, aluminium block, 60.5 mm bore, 60.95 mm stroke, 700 cc, 4 speed gear box.
 
Bristol Model 401 Two Door 1950
Bristol Aeroplane Co Ltd, England
Bristols were strictly fast touring cars with the first "400" being an Anglicised version of the BMW. All Bristols were assembled at Bristol Airfield in small numbers, magnificently detailed and constructed, and sold at high prices.
Type 85C, 6 cyl., 66 mm bore, 98 mm stroke, 1971 cc, triple carburettors (85 bhp at 1500 rpm).
 
Bugatti T38 1927

Etorre Bugatti is regarded as one of the greatest makers of racing, sporting and touring cars. From 1909 till his death in 1947 he produced a succession of beautifully designed and engineered vehicles ranging from the small 4 cylinder Type Ten up to the massive 16 cylinder racer. This exhibit, a medium powered, medium priced model, is a fine example of Bugatti craftsmanship. It has an original Gangloff body. This car was restored by Mr John Southward.
8 cyl., 72 mm bore, 100 mm stroke, 3255 cc, supercharged. Max speed 168 km/h (105 mph).

Ettore Bugatti is regarded as one of the greatest makers of racing, sporting and touring cars. Buick Series 40 Sedan 1939
Buick Motor Car Co, USA
Owned by the late Mr Scaife, Paraparaumu. The Buick Straight-Eight, which originated in 1931, became a big seller with sales exceeding 200,000. This model was regarded in 1939 as the most handsome car of the year in America. The body is by Fisher.
Straight 8 cylinders, 78.58 mm bore, 104.7 mm stroke, 4014 cc, ohv (107 bhp at 3400 rpm). Price ?495.
 
Buick Tourer Model 35 1912
Buick Motor Car Co, USA
This model was described in 1912 as "the highest grade, medium priced, four door touring car offered this season .... Its distinctive features of inside control, positive acting, velvety-grip brakes, and reserve motor power, together with its easy riding qualities and ample leg room for driver and passenger, make it a car of unusual distinction and merit." This car was restored by Len Southward and was the overall winner of the 1965 NZ International Rally and winner of the veteran class in 1972.
4 cylinders, ohv, 95 mm bore, 95 mm stroke, 2693 cc. Price ?335.
 
BW Isetta 1954
Bayerische Motoren Werke, Germany
BMW's first car, produced in 1928, was the "Dixie" Austin 7 built under licence. Since then BMW has become famous for boat and truck engines and excellent motorcycles and automobiles. This "Isetta" bubble car was made under licence to Iso Spa, the Italian firm who started the bubble car craze in 1953.
Single cylinder, 4 stroke, 68 mm bore, 68 mm stroke, 245 cc, (12 hp at 4500 rpm). Weight 349 kg.
