White Steam Car Model MM 1910
The White Co, USA
The White steam cars used a semi-flash type boiler and could run 100 miles between fillings of water. American President Theodore Roosevelt used a White as his official car. Although extremely efficient they were expensive and cost $US3,000-$4,000. From 1911 White gradually changed to manufacturing petrol driven cars.
20 steam hp, high pressure cylinder, 76 mm bore, low pressure 127 mm bore, 114 mm stroke, two vertical cylinders. Water tank capacity, 246 ltr (17? gallons). Kerosene fired boiler.
 
Willys Jeep 1942
Willys Overland Co, USA
Manufactured under Government procurement contracts by both Willys-Overland and Ford during the second World War, the Jeep became a war hero in it's own right. Light and rugged, millions of Jeeps were made, many of them continuing in service overseas long after the end of World War II. Following the War, the design of the Jeep was licensed to Hotchkiss and Mitsubishi, among other companies.
2199 cc, 4 cylinders.
 
Willys Knight Model 70 1927
Willys-Overland Co, USA
Donated by the late Mrs Betty G Lorimer-Allan. Willys were named after John North Willys, a New York automobile dealer who bought the company from the Standard Wheel Co in 1907. John Willys also later bought Oakland. In 1953 Willys was sold to Kaiser Corp and 10 years later the name changed to Kaiser-Jeep Corp.
2915 cc, 6 cylinders, 53 bhp sleeve valve engine. Three speed gearbox.
 
Willys Sedan 1937
Willys-Overland Co, USA
Fitted with a similar four cylinder, side-valve motor to that which powered the famous World War II Jeeps, this model also gained a reputation as a hardy and reliable workhorse..
1560 cc, 4 cylinders.
 
Wolseley Tourer 1904
Wolseley Tool and Motor Co, England
This car was first displayed as a polished chassis at the 1904 Paris Motor Show. Restored to showroom condition by Len Southward in 1962, it became the first New Zealand car to take part in the famous London to Brighton Rally. He won the Hanns Georg Schoof Memorial Trophy at the International Rally in Germany in the same year. The Wolseley cars of 1903-4 were extremely successful in hill climbs and endurance races.
8 hp, tcylinders, 101.6mm bore, 101.6mm stroke, 1647cc, square motor with both pistons moving together to give alternate firing. Four forward and one reverse gears, inverted chain drive to gearbox, roller chain drive.
 
Woods Mobilette Model 5 1915
Woods Mobilette Co, USA
One of America's first cycle cars, this two-seater is 50mm narrower than the Austin 7. These unusual cars did not find great favour with the Amercian public and although new models were announced for 1917, production ceased at the end of 1916. This exhibit is one of only four known to be in existence.
12 hp, 4 cylinders, side valve.
